Baker D. Chirico, Carlton

Baker D. Chirico
178 Faraday Street
Carlton, Victoria

Carlton isn’t really the kind of place you want to be when you’re hankering for a pie unless you’re American and for some reason you call pizza ‘pie’. In that case you’re sorted in Lygon Street and also you are murdering our language and you should stop that.

You’re going to have to make your own judgement as to whether filling your empty pie-sac is worth $14.

Meat pie options are light on the ground, but if you poke your head down Faraday Street between Lygon and Drummond you can get a Beef Ragu pie at Baker D Chirico.

It’s a great pie, but this isn’t coming out of the pie warmer ready for your mouth. They seem to be set up for pies to be taken home or to the office and heated there. That said, if you ask for a hot one, they’ll throw one in the oven for you and you’ll be set in maybe 10 minutes.

The beef ragu filling is rich and would be delicious on its own, the lid is flakey, and the all-important base does a great job of holding it all together. Be warned though, this is not an inexpensive pie so you’re going to have to make your own judgement as to whether filling your empty pie-sac is worth $14.

With a small bag of McShit running at about $14 these days, I see no issue in the price tag. Thank f@ck they put it in the oven though, because if they came at me with a $14 microwaved pie my nervous system might make things unpleasant for everyone.

We just love pies. That’s it. This is a pie appreciation zone.
