6 Main St, Bridgewater on Loddon Victoria 3516, Australia

Greetings from across space and time, my fellow members of the great Pie Nation. It’s been a while, and for that I have nothing to offer but an apology. I’ve still been eating pies of course, but I haven’t been writing about them. I’m here today to fix that.
About two years ago, Mrs Good Pies and I started coming up the the Mallee about once a month to spend a bit of time up at Lake Boga. It’s great — tiny town by a shallow lake in the middle of nowhere. It’s one of Victoria’s best-kept secrets so you have to promise me you won’t tell anyone about it.
Roughly halfway between Melbourne and Lake Boga you pass through the charming town of Bridgewater-on-Loddon. You have to slow down to 50, even though there’s pretty much just a pub and a bakery there. But hoo boy what a bakery!

Rush hour at Bridgewater Bakehouse
I try to get the Chunky Pepper pie whenever I swing through, but they tend to sell out quickly, which means I end up with the plain pie. This is not a disappointment at all. It’s a dependable pie, rich with minced beef and a pleasantly trustworthy gravy that keeps the whole thing structurally sound through to the last bite.

Make sure yuu drop in next time on your way to Swan Hill or wherever. It’s easy to find because there’s always a throng of semi-trailers and caravans parked out front.
If you’re not in a rush, grab a pie and a Portello (note to self, find out exactly what the fuck Portello is and why they don’t sell it in the city), take it to the picnic tables by the Loddon. Absolutely magical.

Like I said, I’m truly sorry for not delivering the content that Pie Nation craves. I’ve got a couple of rippers in the queue so check back soon. 🥧
