Charlton Bakery and Coffee Lounge

58 High Street, Charlton, Victoria

I’ve had a bunch of reasons to pass through Charlton this year, and I got to tell you, the town is really growing on me. It’s got some magnificent sunsets, a proper roadhouse complete with a bain-marie of fried beige mystery delights, a motel that’s getting kinda famous, as well as a good country pub where you can feel comfortable wandering in and bellying up to the bar.

It’s a good stopping point if you’re heading to or from Mildura, and while it’s not quite as showy as Wycheproof with its big wide streets, there is a lot to like about it, bakery included. Charleton Bakery and Coffee Lounge changed hands in 2020, and it has some bad reviews on Tripadvisor from the prior operators, but you should ignore them and listen to me because I never steer you wrong.

They’re not going for gourmet here — this is a proper country bakery that sells pies and pasties (apparently they’re quite good but this isn’t good-pasties.com so I don’t care) that do what they say on the tin.

They do their pies in the unorthodox oblong shape that suits a road pie. See with a road pie you want to eat from the short end, and this maintains some structural rigidity all the way through the pie. Only the oblong pie gives you the short end, and this is why all road pies should be this shape.

Mine was a beef cheese and bacon, which I rate highly as a breakfast pie pretty much anywhere you go. Everything stayed in the casing the whole way through, dropping nothing onto the counter (I ate in the window, watching not much pass by), meaning there was little cleanup. You can get in, eat a pie, and get out super quick if that’s your caper.

You should probably take your time, though, so you can soak in the green and purple magnificence of the decor. Absolutely top-notch, just like the rest of Charlton. 🥧

We just love pies. That’s it. This is a pie appreciation zone.
